Whale Soup

I've had family in town, which always makes Maui feel complete for me. This time even my 77 year old grandmother managed to make the trip from Minnesota, and I am so thankful for this time with her.As a result of the visitors, I've found myself playing tourist and I have to admit, it's relaxing to take a bit of time to enjoy all the things this little island has to offer. Last Friday we ventured out on the Pacific Whale Foundation boat. Every year around 10,000 Humpback whales swim 2,000 miles from Alaska to breed and give birth in the warm Hawaiian waters, and during certain months of the year when they're here, you can even see them from the beach. Elan calls this time of year "whale soup."Random facts about Humpback Whales:-They can grow up to 50 feet long-A Humpback whale can weigh around 80,000 lbs-They have two blowholes (on top, side by side for breathing)-Gestation is 11.5 months-Their diet consists of krill, herring, and mackerel.
