Canh and Thu met via mutual friends one night out on the town. He worked up the courage to ask for her number, which led to two weeks of texting before he finally asked her out on a date. The date went great, and they’ve been crazy in love ever since. He proposed to her at La Jolla Cove, when his initial plans of proposing on a hot air balloon (adventurous, right?) were foiled by poor weather conditions. It worked out for the best, since now they have a place to go and celebrate their anniversary. Thu and Canh are such a great match, and they are the type of people who treat everyone with kindness and love.
The two worked incredibly hard planning their wedding, and certainly didn’t leave out any details in the biggest celebration of their lives. They decided to have their wedding be a smaller, more intimate event, inviting only their closest friends (no parents or family, even). They basically wanted to throw the best party possible, and The White Orchid Beach House is the perfect place to do that. It’s a charming ocean-side property, where the gentle ocean breeze can be felt and the incredible sunset can be enjoyed.
Congratulations Canh & Thu on a beautiful wedding!

I couldn’t be more happy for my good friend Karma Hill, who’s expecting next month. She is one of Maui’s most popular photographers and I am lucky to call her a friend. To say that I am grateful would be an understatement; This lovely lady has been such an inspiration and a catalyst not only in my photography business, but also in my personal life. I find myself frazzled sometimes over life’s little hiccups, and she’s just the person to talk to to put things in perspective and to make me laugh at the absurdity of it all. Friends like Karma are invaluable.
She makes managing her busy shooting schedule and family time look effortless. It absolutely helps that she has such a supportive and loving husband, Steve, who has been a rock for her. Together, they’ve raised their son Brayden, who is a lively, fun-loving boy. At such a young age, it’s easy to see Brayden’s curiosity and zest for life. He is a smart kid with a big heart, and this boy can dance, as he belts out a 40’s pop tune (see black & white photos below)! Every time I see this boy, he makes me smile from ear to ear with his charm. I cannot wait for their next child–it’s such an exciting time in their life!
Karma, you are radiant! Everyone should be so lucky to have a friend like you.

It is a privilege and a pleasure to document a love like this. Travis spent the entire wedding day with his arm around Nicole, stealing kisses when he could. Throughout the reception, he would look at Nicole so lovingly, gently kiss her on the shoulder, and continually shower her with affection. And how could he not complete love this girl? She is such a beautiful person — inside and out. She reminded me of a mini-Reese Witherspoon.
Travis has known Nicole since childhood, being good friends with her cousins. They started dating 3 years ago, after a big winter storm in Seattle that snowed in everyone for two weeks. They spent that time playing in the snow, snowboarding down the street, walking in their snowsuits to a local pub, and cuddling by the fire. A couple of years later, Travis proposed to Nicole on a snowboarding trip to Sun Valley Idaho, where he arranged a horse-drawn sleigh ride. Talk about romantic!
Hawaii holds a special place in Travis & Nicole’s hearts. Growing up, Travis vacationed with his mom and grandmother on the Hawaiian Islands. Since both of them have passed, they really wanted to say their vows in Hawaii.
Congratulations Nicole & Travis on a picture perfect wedding! You two were such a delight to photograph!

Chance. Luck. Fate. Think about all the day-to-day interactions we have with others: running into someone at the store, striking up a conversation while waiting for the bus or at the laundromat. Many such meetings happen and are forgotten in seconds, but I’m always amazed when — instead — you form a connection that will forever change the path of your life.
Meet Chris. He was in France, and had just dropped off his sister at the airport, having decided to explore Europe on his own. He was waiting on the beach of Nice to catch a ferry boat to Corsica. While waiting for the ferry, he noticed Olga with her friends splashing in the ocean. He mustered up the courage to go up and speak French to her, only to find that she wasn’t French. She was visiting from Russia. They both started flirting and when it was time to board the ferry, he had convinced Olga and her friends to explore Corsica with him.
Fast forward two years. Chris is dressed in a white tuxedo, and is waiting for his Bride-to-be on a small, private beach on Maui. With the ocean at their side, a harpist strumming melodic tunes, the two said their hand-written vows and were pronounced husband and wife.
Congratulations, Olga & Chris!
P.S. Stay tuned for their hot trash-the-dress session!

I couldn’t help but giggle going through all the images from this family shoot in Kula, Maui. Not because the images themselves were funny, but because during this shoot I don’t think I stopped laughing. I don’t normally get nervous before shoots, but I distinctly remember having butterflies in my stomach driving to the house. You see, Trish is an amazingly talented photographer on Maui and having not met her in person, I was definitely nervous. However, Trish turned out to be one of the funniest people I’ve ever met — unafraid to keep everyone around her laughing.
We gathered up their 3 beautiful kids and their sweet pup, and took photos on their property. Photographing a family with children can be challenging, especially getting everyone to look at the camera at the same time. However, I did manage to get one more formally posed photo of all of them looking at the camera (see first photo below). We then moved on to capturing more candid moments of them having a good time, which I tend to prefer, because I think that when you look back at photos, those are the moments that really count.

I am always fascinated by the intricate patterns of henna tattoos on a bride’s hands. Here’s a sneak peek from today’s Indian wedding at Mama’s Fish House, North Shore Maui.

A photograph freezes an instant in time, forever. The quick glance, the furtive look, the coy smile, the shared laugh, all preserved perfectly until the end of time. That said, not every moment is equal; just milliseconds away from the perfect one, the eyes are closed in a blink, or the smile is past its prime or hasn’t fully blossomed.
Josh and Deanna’s wedding last month at the Sheraton Maui was full of those beautiful moments. Just look at the way they look at each other! Their ceremony took place on the beach right by Black Rock, which is a rocky peninsula near the hotel. Deanna’s mom and three sisters helped her get ready, and you can immediately tell what a close knit family she has. When her dad walked in to see her all dressed up and looking stunning in her white gown, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
The two lovebirds met almost exactly five years before the wedding in a Seattle bar, through mutual friends. They decided to get married in Maui because their families live in separate states, and they wanted to make it a fun trip for everyone.
Josh and Deanna make a great match, and I wish them many congratulations on their wedding!
