I can clearly remember spending Saturday mornings as a child at home, channel surfing for the best cartoons, eating cereal and battling my brothers for control of the remote. In college, it was all about staying in bed as long as possible, sipping coffee, reading the newspaper, and occasionally trying to tackle the weekend crossword puzzles, which seemed impossible compared to Monday’s puzzle. Those were the days….

Meet Ashley, one of my most lovable friends. We were both in Oahu for work and spent a few extra days there for some R & R. It was great to share a lazy Saturday morning with her, and I couldn’t resist getting some photos. Thank you, Ashley, for being a great model, being so spontaneous and letting me take some pics of you in your PJs.

Amber and Mike are more than familiar with Hawaii, having spent a few wonderful years living in Oahu. They live in San Diego now, but they knew they had to get married in Hawaii. They decided on Hana, and I must say, Hana has always been one of my favorite places on Maui. The lushness of the vegetation, the open landscapes, and the contrast between the greenery, the black lava, and the deep blue ocean is incredibly picturesque.

For the ceremony, the two had the good fortune of having Black Sand Beach at Waianapanapa State Park all to themselves. It misted for just a moment during the ceremony, which is said to be a Hawaiian blessing. Amber had envisioned having a picnic for just the two of them after the ceremony, so that they could relax and take in the excitement of being married. She hand-painted the mugs that say ‘Just Married’ and the two of them enjoyed a refreshing beverage and snacks in a nook right by the beach. Mike even had a special song he played for Amber on the ukelele.

After the picnic, we hiked up to a cross that is situated at the top of a mountain overlooking the town of Hana. The view of the town, the pastures and the ocean were incredible.

Congratulations to Amber and Mike! I hope you move back to the islands someday soon.

I absolutely love photographing couples who are vacationing on Maui. There is something distinctly tangible about the state of relaxation and happiness this island brings to people. Phi-Van and Ricky were visiting from Texas; Ricky with his white fedora and a calm, collected, coolness that exuded from him. Phi-Van who is gorgeous and incredibly sweet, with the hottest southern drawl.

We spent two hours at different spots on Maui to get a variety of photos. One of the first questions I asked them was: “Do you climb trees?” Phi-Van: “Um, no but I will.” I knew right then what a blast we were going to have. We visited the world’s largest banyan tree in Lahaina, the Maui Sugar Train, an abandoned warehouse, a sandy beach and we were lucky enough to have a full rainbow appear during our shoot.

Here are a few of my favorites!

Garn + Muir Workshop is coming to Maui!

There are very few times when photographers really blow me away with not only their lighting and compositional skills but also their originality and creativity. Jake Garn and Ryan Muirhead are prime examples of this. SLUG Magazine says Jake Garn “combines elements of high fashion and the avant-garde to create beautiful, whimsical images that are instantly identifiable.” Ryan Muirhead has experience shooting commercial work for the TV shows Bones and High School Musical as well an upcoming major motion picture. And they are bringing it to Maui: Two full days of lighting, shooting and discussing ways to elevate your work to the next level. They’re even flying a talented styling team over from the mainland just for this workshop.

(Elan and I are off to Oahu to explore the island. This will be our first trip together in a couple of years so I’ve been anticipating this like a little child on Christmas Eve.)

There is something uplifting about a gorgeous girl who loves to splash in the ocean while rockin’ her designer dress! This girl is my inspiration for the weekend!

We had a great meeting at Flatbread, with lots of great discussion. With all the different photographers in the group, it was nice to be able to have an open discussion about photography. There were seasoned pros who have been shooting for over 10 years, and people who have just picked up their first dSLR. Everyone wrote down a photography related question and put it in a bag. We drew questions randomly, read them aloud, and then discussed them as a group. It was really nice to hear everyone’s perspectives and ideas.

Thank you to everyone who participated–we filled up both of the big booths, and a big mahalo to SmugMug for the scrumptious pizza!

Back in May I visited Minnesota for a mini-family reunion. Through the power of Facebook, I was able to reconnect with Jennifer — a childhood friend from grade school. Jennifer, Rana and I were the three musketeers in elementary school — always joined at the hip. I must admit, I’ve always been envious of Jennifer’s pretty red hair.

We started in Loring Park and then walked over the bridge to the Walker Art Center. Here are just a few of my favorites…

Gita is such an elegant & classy girl, and I really wanted to get some photos that showcased these qualities. What better place than the Four Seasons Maui? (Elan and I love this hotel more than any other on the island, the service is absolutely impeccable!)
