I couldn’t be more happy for my good friend Karma Hill, who’s expecting next month. She is one of Maui’s most popular photographers and I am lucky to call her a friend. To say that I am grateful would be an understatement; This lovely lady has been such an inspiration and a catalyst not only in my photography business, but also in my personal life. I find myself frazzled sometimes over life’s little hiccups, and she’s just the person to talk to to put things in perspective and to make me laugh at the absurdity of it all. Friends like Karma are invaluable.

She makes managing her busy shooting schedule and family time look effortless. It absolutely helps that she has such a supportive and loving husband, Steve, who has been a rock for her. Together, they’ve raised their son Brayden, who is a lively, fun-loving boy. At such a young age, it’s easy to see Brayden’s curiosity and zest for life. He is a smart kid with a big heart, and this boy can dance, as he belts out a 40’s pop tune (see black & white photos below)! Every time I see this boy, he makes me smile from ear to ear with his charm. I cannot wait for their next child–it’s such an exciting time in their life!

Karma, you are radiant! Everyone should be so lucky to have a friend like you.

When Drew and I first spoke on the phone, she warned me that her son Brayden might be a bit shy in front of the camera. Since Drew is a super-talented photographer from Southern California, I had a feeling this little fella might be a bit tired of always having his picture taken. Drew brought some candy in case I needed to bribe him, and when the little cutie first came out of the car, he insisted on keeping his eyes covered so I wouldn’t be able to take his photo:

Happily, it didn’t take long at all before Brayden warmed up to the camera. Not only is this little guy charming and playful, but he is full of love for his parents. This is completely unsurprising, since Chuck and Drew shower him with affection. Chuck is obviously an amazing father, always playing around with Brayden. As for Drew, well, this glowing pregnant lady is one of my inspirations. Not only is she a highly successful photographer, but she seems to have found that elusive balance between work and family, and makes it look effortless. Here are a few highlights from their session!

Time flies, it’s inevitable. Rana has been my best friend since 3rd grade. I grew up with this girl all the way through college at the University of Minnesota. We have been through it all — birthdays, graduations, a telemarketing job (never again), our first experience with tequila (which I still have an aversion to), pulling all-nighters cramming for exams and meeting our first loves. Fast forward 10 years, and she’s living in San Diego, happily married to a great guy and pregnant with their first child. Rana has always loved kids. I honestly thought she would have had 5 kids by now and then adopted another 5 on top of that. She’s just that type of woman — a nurturer, incredibly kind, gentle, and full of love.

I haven’t seen her in quite some time, sadly, yet it’s great that we didn’t skip a beat during my visit. Seeing Rana all grown up and being able to take some photos of this special time in her life was really touching for me. I will always have a special place in my heart for Rana; because of her, my childhood was full of laughter and so many great memories.

Congratulations, Rana & Brandon!

Most people these days know her as Rebecca, but to me she will always be Becky. We grew up together at the Butterfields dance studio in Minnesota, spending countless hours in dance classes, rehearsals, competitions and recitals. Hands down, Becky is one of the most lovable people that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She is also a phenomenal workout instructor at The Firm in Minneapolis, where she spends her days making people sweat & stay fit and healthy. Thank goodness for Facebook — we were able to reconnect a few months before her Maui wedding at The Fairmont Kea Lani and Elan & I were able to be part of her big day! Now, two years later, Becky & Matt are expecting a little one! We’re so very happy for both of them. These photographs were taken on the North Shore at Maui’s famous surf spot, Hookipa.

WanYu had her baby! Elizabeth Nicole Kayes was born on December 15th, 2009 at Maui Memorial, weighing a healthy 6lbs 9oz. She is tiny, delicate and cute as a button. Congratulations WanYu & Andrew!

Here are some pictures of baby Nikki’s 2nd day in the world. It was so sweet to photograph this girl.

This sweet, sassy lass is WanYu. These are the final days of her pregnancy and in a few short weeks, she’ll be having a baby girl. She is a workout-aholic and many times a week you can find her teaching a grueling spin class at 24 Hour Fitness on Maui–even with her big pregnant belly. She has an organic beauty about her.

Here are some photographs taken on the North Shore of Paia in Maui before heading down to see the 50 foot waves at Jaws. Thanks to WanYu and her very pregnant belly, we had no problem hitchhiking to and from Jaws, saving our legs from walking 4 miles through pineapple fields.

Meet my sweet friend Nova. She’s 8 months pregnant and the baby is due on January 10th. This will be their second child and she and her husband Kevin are thrilled that they are expecting a girl this time! Nova stands just under 5 feet tall, but don’t let that fool you, what she lacks in height she makes up in spunk & personality. She is goofy, tells outrageous stories and she always has a big smile on her face. Always. Every time I hang out with this girl, there is always someone who comes up to her to tell her that she’s glowing. It’s true, she does glow. And she makes being pregnant look beautiful. Last Wednesday I had the great pleasure of photographing her in Kuau and at Mama’s Fish House beach.
