Natalie is such a darling little girl. She is not at all shy around the camera, since her Dad dabbles in photography and is always clicking away. This happy girl twirls around, skips along the beach, and loves to get her feet and hands in the sand and water. Her parents shower her with a tremendous amount of love, which you can see clearly in the photos.

I cannot wait to see what a difference this starlet is going to make in this world. She is full of love, joy, and tenderness. I couldn’t be happier to document this little sliver in her life, it’s just the beginning for her!

Bringing the 50’s back!

One of the creative aspects of photography I enjoy is teaming up with highly talented friends, such as Jessica Waite. Jessica is one of Maui’s most highly respected makeup artists. She came up with the idea of doing a stylized shoot around these cute 50’s vintage dresses that she happened upon at a rummage sale. Combined with 60’s inspired makeup and large exaggerated hair, these were the concepts behind this shoot of two fun-loving, mischievous friends who find themselves off Maui’s beaten path. This shoot was styled with a nod to “Whimsy Pop Art Culture” – in contrast with the historical industrial remnants of the Pu’une’ne Sugar Mill.

These two lovebirds are visting from Calgary to plan their Maui wedding for next April. They met in accounting class and have been together for the last four years. Today we went around the North Shore of Maui to photograph the two of them, making a special stop at the Haiku Mill.

Jessica & Guy traveled all the way from Alaska to Maui to scout a location for their wedding, and to play (of course!). These two met in dental school and have been inseparable ever since. Kenya and Imani flew out to Maui for some rest & relaxation. It was a special mother-daughter trip, since Kenya is expecting a second child soon, and it will be more difficult to get that one-on-one time with Imani once the new baby arrives. During the shoot, it was so clear how Imani really looks up to her mom. How could she not? Kenya is beautiful, strong and incredibly loving.

There is so much I love about Imani — this little girl stole my heart with her playfulness & silliness, and yet there is a tenderness about her also that is incredibly precious.

My husband and I had an amazing day with the guys from Stillmotion, it was literally one of the most fun days we can remember spending together. From having us split coconuts on the front lawn with a machete to the last shot of the day where they had me jump off a cliff into a dusky ocean (I was on the edge, looking down a bit nervously, until Patrick kindly hinted “You have about 10 seconds until we lose light!”) it was a fun and action-packed day. Stillmotion is simply incredible to work with: they are so talented, friendly, and so focused on telling the story in the best possible way. Thanks so much, guys, we love you!

Nesting Beauties ~ A stylized shoot

As a photographer, I love stylized shoots because they allow me to try new ideas, new locations, and surround myself with other creative people to bring a vision to life. The Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center here on Maui has amazingly cool grounds, and I’ve been wanting to shoot up there for a while. There’s an incredible outdoor stick structure (created by world-renowned artist Patrick Dougherty), who used strawberry guava, eucalyptus and white ash to create these giant nest-like structures, which give an earthy and organic feel that we wanted to capture.

Lovin’ in the rain: Lindy + Jeremiah

Kauai is a magical island, and I love when work brings me to shoot there. The grass is greener, the air sweeter, and the light scatters just a bit differently. It might seem funny to some that each island – so close to the others – would have its own flavor, it’s own raison d’être, but this is one of the things that is special about Hawaii.

I met Lindy and Jeremiah and darling young Cooper, and instantly fell in love. Lindy has spunk, style, grace, and the biggest smile this side of the Mississippi. Jeremiah, devilishly handsome with a boyish grin, has soft, kind eyes, which spent every second on Lindy. And then there was Cooper, such a great character for his young age, flashing a mischievous smile as he bounded up and down the sand, and into the water, every second an indelible new memory.

Jeremiah said that the first time he met Lindy, he thought “I would like to end up with someone like that.” By the very next day, he decided that it was more than that, he wanted to end up with Lindy. And so he told her. And a few months later, here they were, blue and red matching sneakers, hair wet from the rain, becoming husband and wife.

It rained the entire ceremony, but you wouldn’t have known it. There were flash floods, road closures, power lines down all over the island, but the only thing that meant anything at all was the two of them and the love they had for each other on the beach that day.

The rain dripped down my camera, off the lens, and down my face, getting mixed with my own salty tears from the emotion, onto the sand and then finally into the ocean.

Tim and Stephanie live in New York City, close to Central Park, which means it was a long flight for these two lovebirds out to Maui. They met in a bar when Tim became smitten, and mustered up the courage to introduce himself. He must have been charming, because the two are getting married at The Ritz Carlton Kapalua this April. We had so much fun touring the north and south shores of Maui and shooting in a variety of locations. Stephanie, as if you couldn’t tell from the photos, is an extremely talented dancer who is actually in two different dance companies in the Big Apple. Proving that opposites attract, Tim cannot pirouette or jete, but he is a super-successful CIO. They always make each other laugh, and never take life too seriously.

Maui’s newest retreat: Lumeria

Last week I had the opportunity to photograph Lumeria, the newest reatreat on the island. Maui’s beautiful North Shore has limited options for lodging. There are no big hotels here, only a few inns and then bed and breakfasts, so more often than not, visiting guests stay with us. This might explain why I’m so excited about Lumeria, which is a new (and gorgeous!) property which just opened. It’s a perfect place for spending a week relaxing, taking yoga classes, meditating, or taking surf lessons. (In fact, I might try to convince my husband to get away with me for a weekend there).

The grounds are absolutely breathtaking, with lots of orchard trees, native Hawaii vegetation, and of course an ocean view. There is a yoga room on the grounds with top-notch yoga instructors, and a chef who serves some of the freshest meals on the island.

This historic property was remodeled last year by the architectural mastermind Xorin Bables, seen in the last picture in tree pose.

A lovely Grand Wailea wedding: Lindsey + Peter

Today is of course Valentine’s Day, so what better time to share an incredibly romantic story with you?

Many years ago, when Lindsey was just a little girl, her dad and step-mom visited Maui. They stopped by the Grand Wailea, her dad recording the visit on his camcorder. At one point in the footage, her dad is filming the chapel and mentions that one day Lindsey should get married in the chapel. Who knew that years later, his comment would prove remarkably prescient?

Fast-forward many years, to the night when Peter and Lindsey met. According to Peter, she pushed one of her friends into Peter so that she could strike up a conversation with him. Apparently the strategy worked, because they hit it off and have been together ever since.

Peter serves in the army and had been overseas, so the timing worked out perfectly for their Maui wedding, in this beautiful little chapel by the sea which her dad filmed so long ago.

I must say, I feel so lucky to have the best clients! I spent 3 days with Lindsey and Peter. Here are photos from their magnificent wedding!

Saying “I Do” at Merriman’s: Lindsay + Aaron

There are a few places on Maui which are so magical, I could shoot there every day and never get tired of it. One of those places is Merriman’s on the West side of Maui. There is a beautiful bay with calm, clear blue water, soft sand, and a short walk away is an amazing lava ledge that flows out into the ocean. When the sun sets, the golden light hits the black rocks, the sea turns a deep blue, and the stars come out to play. And of course, just up the hill is Merriman’s, one of my favorite restaurants on the island.

We had the pleasure of photographing Lindsay and Aaron’s wedding at this beautiful spot last weekend. They were such a sweet couple, and they had a great group of friends and family to share the moment with them. They wrote their own vows, which didn’t leave a dry eye among the guests. Afterwards, we walked down to the bay for some shots in the sand and water, and then finished up on the lava rocks, where they were treated to the most spectacular sunset of the year!
