As a child, I loved to pick on my little brother because quite simply, that’s what older sisters did. I remember telling him that the lima beans in the rice were cookies so that he’d not only eat all his the lima beans but the ones in my rice too. And one of my favorite things to do was to take him down to the dark, scary basement and tell him that I was an alien. That guaranteed a good cry on his part every single time. Good times!

Last Saturday, In a lovely little church in San Francisco, he married the love of his life. Ever since he met Holliann, he’s been completely smitten and I have not seen him happier. The two have been inseparable ever since their first date at Chipotle.

The wedding was full of great little details. Holliann, with the help of her mom and sisters, carefully selected the flowers and handcrafted the bouquets and boutonnieres. She looked radiant!

A huge congratulations to my little brother & new sister-in-law! I couldn’t be more proud.

And James, I’m not really an alien.

Photographing families, especially children is something that I absolutely *adore.* No matter how busy wedding season becomes this year, I will always make time for family photo sessions. Being able to witness the beautiful bond between parent and child is precious and it fills my heart like no other. Last month, Chelsea, who is a talented photographer based in Oregon, decided to have her family portraits taken while vacationing on Maui.

With near future plans of Elan and I starting our own family, it was inspiring (and reassuring) to see a busy photographer balance family, work, play and motherhood ~ beautifully. Here are a few of my favorites from their session.

I’ve had family in town, which always makes Maui feel complete for me. This time even my 77 year old grandmother managed to make the trip from Minnesota, and I am so thankful for this time with her.

As a result of the visitors, I’ve found myself playing tourist and I have to admit, it’s relaxing to take a bit of time to enjoy all the things this little island has to offer. Last Friday we ventured out on the Pacific Whale Foundation boat. Every year around 10,000 Humpback whales swim 2,000 miles from Alaska to breed and give birth in the warm Hawaiian waters, and during certain months of the year when they’re here, you can even see them from the beach. Elan calls this time of year “whale soup.”

Random facts about Humpback Whales:
-They can grow up to 50 feet long
-A Humpback whale can weigh around 80,000 lbs
-They have two blowholes (on top, side by side for breathing)
-Gestation is 11.5 months
-Their diet consists of krill, herring, and mackerel. While their in Hawaii, they do not eat.

Here are photos from our whale watching adventure.

During my last trip to the mainland, I had the pleasure of stopping in San Diego to meet Rana & Brandon’s daughter Vida for the first time. Vida has a lot of spunk for such a little girl. Not only is she playful but she’s also vocally gifted–move over Mariah Carey! There is a sparkle in her eyes, especially when she is being coy in front of the camera and her smile could melt anyone’s heart.

I always knew Rana was going to be a nurturing mother and I couldn’t be happier to see her slip into the role of motherhood so gracefully. Happy 6 months, Vida!

A couple of weeks ago, I photographed Heather, Travis and their little boy Mason. We started at Flatbread, where he showed me his coloring skills, and then we ventured to Kuau where he demonstrated his Tae Kwon Do green belt form and also where Coco the friendly Kuau parrot swooped down to say hi.

I couldn’t stop smiling while photographing this loving family. Mason is so well loved, every kid should be so lucky to have parents like his!

One of the great things about living in Maui, 500 feet from the ocean, is that there’s no excuse not to go swimming. Every day.

We usually take Barkley down to the ocean for a quick dip in the ocean around sunset. It’s really nice to soak in the beauty with the sunset and the colors of the sky changing into vibrant orange & purple hues. Here are some photographs of Elan and Barkley splashing in the ocean.

Ann, Aron & Thi are great friends of ours on the island. They live upcounty Maui in Haiku, on a spacious two acres where they grow a variety of vegetables, fruit, ginger, galanga, fresh herbs and coffee beans. Every time Elan and I go over there we walk out with a big bag full of fresh produce. Who needs Whole Foods when you have friends like them, eh?

I had the pleasure of taking some family portraits for them. Thi is one of the most intelligent little girls that I know. She’s always asking questions, even sometimes stumping me. She’s also one of the happiest girls on Maui. And how could she not be, Ann & Aron shower her with so much love.

Most people these days know her as Rebecca, but to me she will always be Becky. We grew up together at the Butterfields dance studio in Minnesota, spending countless hours in dance classes, rehearsals, competitions and recitals. Hands down, Becky is one of the most lovable people that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She is also a phenomenal workout instructor at The Firm in Minneapolis, where she spends her days making people sweat & stay fit and healthy. Thank goodness for Facebook — we were able to reconnect a few months before her Maui wedding at The Fairmont Kea Lani and Elan & I were able to be part of her big day! Now, two years later, Becky & Matt are expecting a little one! We’re so very happy for both of them. These photographs were taken on the North Shore at Maui’s famous surf spot, Hookipa.

This was certainly not a typical family portrait request. Brady – whom I’ve known for 2 years – called and asked if I’d take his family’s yearly family portrait. Apparently every year they have a different theme to the shoot. Last year’s theme was “togas on the beach” and this year he wanted to go for a “white trash” look. We drove up to Kula to take standard family pictures at the outskirts of the Alii Kula Lavender Farm and then we drove to a location that his brother had discovered, with a broken down airbus. They had even gone so far as to bring beer bottles, a gas tank, stools, wife beaters, hats, cast iron pans, and an ax, but to name a few props. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I enjoyed taking them.
