Jen & Chris came to Maui to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. Yes, these two have been married for a decade and you would hardly know it since they both look incredibly young. Jen & Chris are hilarious! They make me laugh. Hard. I could feel the love between them through their glances at each other, silly banter and even one threat of throwing him into the ocean. Even though it was my first time meeting them, I feel like I’ve known them for years. I actually connected with Jen through Facebook. She’s the younger sister of Bunn Salarzon, a talented Portland-based photographer who is flying to Chicago with me to shoot a wedding in the Fall.

Jen & Chris — Congratulations on your anniversary! And thank you for all the laughs–my cheeks were sore! Portland is on the top of my list of cities to visit next….and that’s not only because of promises of good Thai food.

The concept of visualizing a scene in my head before photographing it (”pre-viz”) has been dancing in my head for the past few weeks, thanks to Fred Egan and also Lara Casey. Of course I love the spontaneity and candidness in family portraits and weddings, but I’m now also fascinated by the idea of creating a particular scene with a style of clothing, accessories, activities and locations. Ms. Gita ~ part I was going for a vintage look with a birdcage veil, high heels and a cafe setting. For part II I wanted a sandy beach, cowboy hat, pickup truck and converses. Of course, not all of those details in a single shot.

My dear friend Gita is a fun loving girl. She’s spontaneous and outgoing, to say the least. I’ll never forget the time she volunteered to go on stage in Vegas in a packed room for a hypnotist’s show. She was the entertainment for the night & stole the show. Don’t worry Gita, I promise that those pictures will never make it onto the Internet. And thank you, Gita, for being an active and willing participant in this creative process.

Side Note: Lara Casey- Editor of Southern Weddings Magazine is having a workshop on April 29th on the Big Island called Making Things Happen. I had the opportunity to hear her speak at WPPI, and this business savvy woman has invaluable wisdom to share ~ in a cute Southern accent to boot!

Ann, Aron & Thi are great friends of ours on the island. They live upcounty Maui in Haiku, on a spacious two acres where they grow a variety of vegetables, fruit, ginger, galanga, fresh herbs and coffee beans. Every time Elan and I go over there we walk out with a big bag full of fresh produce. Who needs Whole Foods when you have friends like them, eh?

I had the pleasure of taking some family portraits for them. Thi is one of the most intelligent little girls that I know. She’s always asking questions, even sometimes stumping me. She’s also one of the happiest girls on Maui. And how could she not be, Ann & Aron shower her with so much love.

Intelligent. Driven. Sophisticated — three words to describe Gita. I’ve known her since our days back in chiropractic school. Here is part I of III. Yes, you read correctly, there will be III posts of this beautiful girl and over the series you will learn why she’s one of my dearest friends.

Part I- We decided to take some pictures in downtown Wailuku with a classic, more vintage look. There’s something special about Cafe Marc Aurel — their affogatto (a scoop of vanilla drowned in espresso) is heavenly. One sip of it puts the biggest smile on my face. Sadly, they are closing at the end of the month. We also stopped by Cafe O’ Leil, which is one of my favorite eateries on Maui. Enjoy.

Last month, I had the great opportunity of second shooting for the amazing Fred Egan, who flew in from Fort Worth, TX to shoot this tropical wedding.

Sarah & Blane were married on March 29th at the charming Olowalu Plantation House. This charming oceanside house has a lot of character, and with hardwood floors and nautical accents displayed around the house, it’s hard not to fall in love with the place.

Sarah & Blane traveled from California, and had invited their closest friends and family to vacation the week prior to the wedding. All of the details were nicely put together and it was quite evident that a lot of thought and detail went into the planning.

G & Phil spent their honeymoon on Maui at the Marriot Wailea. The day after I returned from WPPI we set up a honeymoon shoot. It was a good thing because it was one of their first times venturing outside their resort. I can’t blame them too much, they were on their honeymoon after all. Here are some photos from their last day on Maui.

I found a plumeria so G could wear it behind her ear.
I caught this brief moment of her taking in the fragrant scent of the flower for the first time.

The Makena Beach & Golf Resort (formerly known as The Maui Prince) is under new management and thus in the process of some major restructuring. I was graciously invited last week to take some images of their beautiful grounds. I feel very fortunate to have been able to work with some of the best wedding vendors on this island for the shoot:

Organizer & Visionary: Genevieve De Rego ~ Wedding & Catering Service Manager for the resort.
The exquisite floral arrangements: Dellables by Della ~ This woman’s flower arrangements are art. They speak for themselves.
Make up: Jessica Waite ~ Maui’s top make-up artist. This girl has such a lively personality. We’ll be working closely in the future.
Hair: Dan Sanchez ~ I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for him as he did wonders for my hair on my own wedding day. The man is brilliant.
Models: The gorgeous Reba & Clifton Dodge.
